Locations of the St. Francis Vegetable Garden
St. Francis Vegetable Garden currently has three main locations and two school-based locations. We are eager to continue to spread throughout the Bayou Region. We continue to grow and harvest local produce, provide integrated classrooms and support local growers of our community. All harvested produce is donated to local food banks. We hope to “plant roots” in a community near you. Below are our locations:
Our main garden, our flagship site, is located on Rienzi Drive in Thibodaux, behind the Warren J. Harang Jr. Municipal Auditorium. This 1/2-acre garden is home to countless school field trips, corporate field days and family fun. We encourage individuals, families, school groups, corporations and any willing volunteer to join us for planting, maintaining and harvesting. This site hosts our weekly Rienzi Market.
We partnered with Byron E. Talbot and Arlen B. Cenac, of the A.B. Cenac Jr. Foundation, to create a community garden in Houma. Families, schools and corporate groups of Terrebonne parish enjoy this garden. It is designed to replicate our Main Garden in Thibodaux. We are eager for new volunteers to come and help us out in Houma. Harvests from this location will benefit the food banks in Terrebonne.
Harmon Park Community Garden
We partnered with Live Healthy Houma, an action-oritened workgroup, and Terrebonne Parish Recreation to place a garden at 445 Magnolia Street in downtown Houma. This garden serves to increase access to fresh produce to the community by donating the produce to food-insecure students and their families through the Helio Foundation, also known as Mom’s Pantry. This garden also serves as a learning site for the Greauxing at Home program, a program used to teach food-insecure families how to grow, cook, and preserve food so that they can be successful at growing a garden at home.
Thibodaux Elementary School
We partnered with Thibodaux Elementary, Kiwanis Club of Thibodaux and E.D. White Catholic High School Key Club to create a St. Francis Vegetable Garden on the grounds of Thibodaux Elementary. This garden is located in the heart of the school’s campus and is enjoyed by students, faculty and staff. Teachers and students are able to take their classrooms outdoors and educate their students on healthy living, science and math. This garden provides the students with insight on growing, maintaining and harvesting a garden. They are very proud of what they have created and want to see the fruit trees and plants thrive season after season.
H.L. Bourgeois High School
We partnered with Ta Wa Si, a women’s civic club, and Mr. Richard Weimer, of Weimer Gros Flores, to create a special place for the students of H.L. Bourgeois. This garden is a handicap accessible garden that serves a sensory and therapeutic wonderland for handicap students of Terrebonne Parish. Not only can the students of H.L. Bourgeois enjoy this facility, other special-needs students throughout the parish are encouraged to schedule a visit. The students are able to maintain the garden while learning the importance of healthy living. These students receive therapy through relaxing activities such as watering, planting, and maintaining the garden’s beauty.
